About

I am currently conducting research on eating disorders among contemporary Chinese young adults (aged 18-30). Unlike the sin of gluttony driven by purely physical desires mentioned in the Bible’s seven deadly sins, eating disorders are a type of psychological disorder that primarily involves abnormal concerns and behaviors related to food and weight. These disorders can lead individuals to engage in extreme behaviors regarding eating, including excessive restriction, binge-eating, purging behaviors, and unhealthy eating habits. Eating disorders are often accompanied by unhealthy evaluations and perceptions of body image and weight, resulting in negative feelings and emotions about one’s own body.

Common types of eating disorders include:

  1. Anorexia Nervosa: Individuals have extreme concerns about body weight and image, leading to food restriction and a weight below the normal range. Patients often have severe distortions in body image.
  2. Atypical Anorexia Nervosa: Similar to anorexia nervosa, but individuals’ weight remains within the normal range. They also have intense concerns about body weight and image.
  3. Mixed/Co-Morbid Anorexia Nervosa: A mixed form with characteristics of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders.
  4. Bulimia Nervosa: Patients often engage in binge-eating and use purging methods (e.g., vomiting, laxatives) to control weight. They may have intermittent episodes of binge-eating, but their weight typically remains within the normal range.
  5. Binge Eating Disorder: Individuals frequently experience episodes of excessive overeating, but unlike those with bulimia nervosa, they do not use purging methods to control weight.

In addition, eating disorders not only impact physical health but can also have negative effects on an individual’s psychological and social functioning. Therefore, early identification and treatment of eating disorders are crucial for the health and well-being of contemporary Chinese young adults. During the research, I am also focusing on the prevalence of eating disorders among young people, potential psychological and social factors, as well as their attitudes towards body image and weight. A comprehensive study of these factors can provide more targeted support and intervention measures for contemporary Chinese young adults.
